Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Adelaide?

Three to four days covers the city - the Central Market, North Terrace museums, Glenelg beach - plus a wine-region day in the Barossa, McLaren Vale or Adelaide Hills. Add more time if you want to visit Kangaroo Island or the Flinders Ranges, both worthwhile but a flight or long drive away.

Is Adelaide worth visiting?

Yes - it's a relaxed, elegant city ringed by parklands, with one of Australia's best food markets, easy beaches and three world-class wine regions within an hour. It's a festival capital in autumn, far cheaper and less crowded than Sydney or Melbourne, and a gateway to South Australia's wild landscapes.

When is the best time to visit Adelaide?

Autumn (March-May) is ideal - warm, dry days and the famous festival season (Fringe and others run Feb-March). Spring (September-November) is also lovely for wine regions and gardens. Summer (December-February) can be extremely hot with 40°C heatwaves; winter is mild but the wettest season.

Which wine region should I visit from Adelaide?

The Barossa Valley (an hour north) is the most famous, known for bold Shiraz and historic cellar doors. McLaren Vale (45 minutes south) pairs wine with the coast. The Adelaide Hills (20 minutes up) offers cool-climate whites and the German village of Hahndorf. All are easy day trips by car or tour.

Do you need a car in Adelaide?

Not for the city - it's flat, walkable, and served by free buses and a free tram zone, with a historic tram to Glenelg beach. A car or guided tour becomes useful for the wine regions and Adelaide Hills. Many visitors take wine tours so they can taste freely without driving.

Is Adelaide good for food and wine lovers?

Exceptionally - the Adelaide Central Market is among the southern hemisphere's best, the small-bar scene is thriving, and three premier wine regions sit on the doorstep. South Australia produces a large share of the country's wine, so cellar doors, long lunches and produce trails are central to any visit.

Can you visit Kangaroo Island from Adelaide?

Yes - Kangaroo Island is reached by a short flight from Adelaide or a drive plus ferry from Cape Jervis (about two hours south). It's famous for wildlife, beaches and Flinders Chase National Park. Give it at least two days; it's too far and too special to rush as a single day trip.
