Anchorage, United States travel guide

Alaska's gateway city: glaciers, moose on the bike path and midnight sun within a mountain's reach.

  • Best time to visit: June-September
  • Average daily budget: $150 to $320 USD
  • Ideal trip length: 3 to 4 days

Anchorage isn't a pretty city, and that's fine, because it's the launchpad for everything Alaska does better than anywhere else: the Chugach mountains start at the city limits, moose wander suburban streets, and the Seward Highway south is one of the great coastal drives on earth. Base here for glacier cruises, the Kenai Peninsula and Denali, and in June you get 19 hours of usable daylight to fit it all in.

Getting around

Anchorage is spread out and built for cars, so a rental (roughly $70 to $130 a day in summer, booked months ahead) is close to essential. People Mover buses cover downtown and Midtown, Uber works in the city, and the Alaska Railroad runs scenic services to Seward, Talkeetna and Denali. The airport (ANC) is 15 minutes from downtown.

Safety

Wildlife is the real hazard: moose cause more injuries than bears, so give them 25 metres and never get between a cow and calf. Carry bear spray on trails and make noise. Downtown has a visible homeless population and some late-night street issues, so stay aware after dark. Weather changes fast, cell coverage drops off outside town, and daylight swings from 19 hours in June to under six in December.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Anchorage?

Three to four as a base. One day for the city, Coastal Trail and Native Heritage Center; one for the Seward Highway and Portage Glacier; one for a Kenai Fjords cruise out of Seward. Add two more if you're pushing north to Denali.

When is the best time to visit Anchorage?

June to September for long daylight, open tours and 15-22C days. June and July have the most light, August brings salmon runs and slightly lower prices, and September adds fall colour. Winter is for northern lights, skiing and the Iditarod start in March.

Is Anchorage expensive?

Yes, Alaska is a high-cost destination: $150 to $320 a day. Summer hotels run $150 to $300, car rental $70 to $130 a day, and a glacier cruise $180 to $250. Groceries and restaurant prices sit well above the US mainland because almost everything ships in.

Do you need a car in Anchorage?

Effectively yes. The city sprawls and the best of Alaska is on the highways out of it. Book rentals months ahead for summer, as fleets sell out. If you'd rather not drive, the Alaska Railroad and coach tours cover Seward, Talkeetna and Denali well.

Can you see the northern lights in Anchorage?

Yes, from late August to mid-April on clear, dark nights with active aurora. City light pollution hurts, so drive 30 to 60 minutes out to Glen Alps, Eklutna or Point MacKenzie. Fairbanks has notably better odds if aurora is the main goal.

Is Anchorage safe for tourists?

Generally yes, though its property-crime rate is above the US average. Keep valuables out of parked cars, be alert around downtown and Spenard late at night, and lock rentals at trailheads. Wildlife and weather are the bigger practical risks for visitors.

How far is Denali from Anchorage?

About 240 miles, four to five hours by car on the Parks Highway, or roughly 7.5 hours on the scenic Alaska Railroad. It's too far for a comfortable day trip; plan at least one overnight in Denali or Talkeetna if you want park time.
