Annecy pairs a candy-coloured medieval old town threaded with canals against a lake so clear it is regularly called the purest in Europe, with Alpine peaks rising straight out of it. It is a walking, swimming and cycling town: a flat 40km loop circles the water, paragliders drop off the Col de la Forclaz all afternoon, and Savoyard cheese dinners wait at the end. Chamonix, Geneva and the Aravis ski resorts are all within an hour.

Getting around
Geneva airport is the closest hub, about 45 minutes by bus or car, and direct trains link Annecy to Lyon and Paris. The old town and lakefront are entirely walkable, and the Voie Verte cycle path makes bike hire the best way to reach beaches and villages. Lake boats run to Talloires, Duingt and Menthon in summer, and buses serve the shoreline and nearby ski resorts, but a car helps for mountain viewpoints.
Safety
Annecy is a safe, prosperous Alpine town with low crime beyond occasional pickpocketing in summer market crowds. Most risks are outdoor ones: the lake is cold enough at depth to cause shock even in August, some beaches are unsupervised, and mountain weather above the lake changes fast with afternoon thunderstorms. Cycle paths get crowded in peak season, and paragliding or via ferrata should only be done with certified operators.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in Annecy?
Three to four days is ideal. One day covers the old town, canals, castle and lakefront park, one is for cycling or boating around the lake with a swim stop, and one for the mountains at Col de la Forclaz or Semnoz. A fourth day allows a trip to Chamonix, Geneva or the Aravis villages.
When is the best time to visit Annecy?
June to September for lake swimming, cycling and long evenings, with July and August busiest. May and late September are quieter with pleasant walking weather. December to March suits skiers using Annecy as a base, and the Christmas market and Venetian carnival in late winter are both worth timing a trip around.
Can you swim in Lake Annecy?
Yes. It is one of the cleanest lakes in Europe, with several free public beaches such as Plage d'Albigny and Plage des Marquisats plus paid beaches with facilities. Water reaches around 22 to 24C in July and August. It stays cold at depth year-round, so ease in and avoid diving straight into deep water.
Is Annecy worth visiting?
Yes. The mix of a genuinely beautiful canal old town, an exceptionally clear Alpine lake and mountains within minutes is hard to match in France, and it works in both summer and winter. It is compact enough for a long weekend and easy to pair with Geneva, Chamonix or Lyon.
How do you get from Geneva to Annecy?
Direct buses run from Geneva airport to Annecy in about 45 minutes to an hour and are the simplest option. Driving takes roughly 45 minutes. Trains involve a change and take longer, around 90 minutes to two hours. Note that you cross from Switzerland into France, so keep ID with you.
Do you need a car in Annecy?
Not for the town, which is compact, pedestrian-friendly and badly served for parking in summer. Bikes, lake boats and shoreline buses cover most of what visitors want. A car is useful for mountain viewpoints like Semnoz and Forclaz, ski resorts in winter, and reaching Alpine villages that buses serve infrequently.
Is Annecy expensive?
It is moderately expensive by French standards, especially lakefront hotels in July and August. Budget around $120 to $220 a day. Staying slightly outside the centre in Annecy-le-Vieux or Cran-Gevrier, buying market picnics for lake days and renting bikes rather than boats keeps costs sensible.
