Bend, United States travel guide

High-desert Oregon town where rivers, volcanoes and breweries meet.

  • Best time to visit: June-September
  • Average daily budget: $150 to $350 USD
  • Ideal trip length: 4 to 5 days

Bend is what happens when a mill town gets taken over by people who ski before work. The Deschutes River runs straight through the middle of it, floated all summer on inner tubes, while the Cascade volcanoes rise to the west and lava fields stretch south. It has more breweries per head than almost any US city, 300 days of sun and trailheads within ten minutes of downtown.

Getting around

Redmond Municipal Airport (RDM) is 20 minutes north with direct flights from western US hubs; Portland is a three-and-a-half-hour drive over the Cascades. A car is best for trailheads and the lakes, though downtown and the Old Mill are walkable and connected by a good riverside path network. Bend is exceptionally bike-friendly in summer.

Safety

Bend is a safe, affluent town. Outdoor hazards matter more than crime: high-desert sun at 3,600ft burns fast, river currents are cold and swift in early summer, and wildfire smoke can settle in during August and September. Winter driving over Santiam and Willamette passes requires traction devices, and mountain weather changes quickly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time to visit Bend?

July to September is peak, with warm dry days around 26-30C, cool nights and everything open, including the Cascade Lakes Highway. June and early October are quieter with good hiking. Winter is ski season at Mount Bachelor. Late spring can still see snow at elevation, and the high lakes stay closed until roughly late June.

How many days do you need in Bend?

Four days is the sweet spot: one for downtown and a river float, one at Smith Rock, one on the Cascade Lakes Byway and one for Newberry Volcano or mountain biking. Two days covers the town and one big outdoor outing but leaves a lot behind.

Is Bend worth visiting?

Yes, especially if you like being outside. It combines a floatable river through town, alpine lakes, volcanoes, lava caves, world-class rock climbing, hundreds of miles of mountain-bike trails and a genuinely serious craft-beer scene, all with high-desert sunshine most of the year.

Can you float the Deschutes River in Bend?

Yes, and it is the town's signature summer activity. The popular stretch runs about 1.5 miles from Riverbend Park to Drake Park, takes 60 to 90 minutes, and a seasonal shuttle carries floaters back. Rent tubes locally, wear a life jacket, and exit before the Bend Whitewater Park passage unless you are experienced.

How far is Bend from Portland?

About 160 miles, three and a half hours by car via Mount Hood on US-26 or over Santiam Pass on US-20. Winter storms can slow both routes. Flying into Redmond, 20 minutes from Bend, avoids the mountain drive entirely.

Is Bend expensive?

It has become one of Oregon's pricier towns. Summer hotel rates and vacation rentals run high, and popular restaurants book out. Oregon has no sales tax, which helps, and food trucks, brewery taprooms and free trail access keep daily costs reasonable if lodging is your only big spend.

Do you need a car in Bend?

Yes for the best of it. Downtown, the Old Mill and several breweries are walkable or cyclable, but Smith Rock, the Cascade Lakes, Tumalo Falls and Mount Bachelor all require driving. Bike rentals cover in-town movement well in summer.
