Bora Bora, French Polynesia travel guide

Overwater bungalows, a turquoise lagoon, and a volcanic peak at its heart.

  • Best time to visit: May-October (dry season)
  • Average daily budget: $300 to $800 USD
  • Ideal trip length: 4 to 6 days

Bora Bora is the postcard - a jagged volcanic peak rising from a lagoon so blue it looks edited, ringed by motus (islets) lined with overwater bungalows. This is the South Pacific at its most indulgent: snorkelling with rays and reef sharks, sunset cruises, and resorts where your room sits on stilts above the water. It's a splurge destination, often a honeymoon, but the lagoon itself is the real luxury. Joy Plus plans your snorkel trips, lagoon tours and sunset moments around the tides and the light.

Getting around

You arrive by plane from Tahiti, then a boat transfer across the lagoon. There's no public transport to speak of - resorts run boat shuttles, and you can hire a bike, scooter or car on the main island. Most of your movement is by boat across the lagoon.

Safety

Very safe with little crime. The risks are practical: strong sun, reef cuts (wear water shoes), and the cost - everything is imported and expensive. The reef sharks on lagoon tours are harmless blacktips. Book the dry season to avoid cyclone risk and rain.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Bora Bora?

Four to six days is ideal - enough for a full lagoon tour, a sunset cruise, snorkelling, an interior 4x4 trip and plenty of overwater-bungalow downtime. Many travellers combine Bora Bora with a few days on Tahiti or Moorea, since you transit through Tahiti to get there anyway.

Is Bora Bora worth the cost?

For a once-in-a-lifetime or honeymoon trip, most say yes - the lagoon's colour and the overwater-bungalow experience are genuinely unmatched. It is expensive (resorts and food are pricey, almost everything is imported), but you can reduce costs with pensions (guesthouses), roulotte meals and a non-overwater room.

When is the best time to visit Bora Bora?

The dry season (May-October) brings sunny skies, lower humidity, calm seas and the best lagoon visibility - peak season. The wet season (November-April) is hotter and more humid with brief heavy showers and a small cyclone risk, but prices are lower and the islands lush.

How do you get to Bora Bora?

You fly into Tahiti (Pape'ete) from international hubs, then take a roughly 50-minute domestic flight to Bora Bora's airport, which sits on a motu. From there a boat transfers you across the lagoon to your resort or the main island. Resorts arrange these boat transfers.

Do you have to stay in an overwater bungalow?

No - while overwater bungalows are the icon, you can also stay in beachfront resort rooms or far more affordable family-run pensions (guesthouses) on the main island. Pensions let you experience Bora Bora on a fraction of the budget, with day tours covering the lagoon highlights.

Can you swim with sharks and rays in Bora Bora?

Yes - lagoon tours include snorkelling with harmless blacktip reef sharks and stingrays in shallow, clear water, a highlight of any visit. Guides ensure it's safe and respectful to the animals. You'll also find vibrant coral gardens teeming with tropical fish across the lagoon.

Is Bora Bora good for non-divers?

Absolutely - the lagoon is shallow, calm and warm, so snorkelling reveals rays, sharks, turtles and coral without any diving skills. Many resorts and tours cater to first-timers, and you can swim straight off Matira Beach. Certified diving is available too, but snorkelling alone is spectacular here.
