Chennai, India travel guide
South India's cultural capital: Dravidian temples, filter coffee, Carnatic music and a 12 km city beach.
- Best time to visit: November-February
- Average daily budget: $30 to $80 USD
- Ideal trip length: 3 to 4 days
Chennai is the gateway to Tamil Nadu and the most unapologetically South Indian of India's metros: gopuram towers over temple tanks, Marina Beach stretching for miles, sabhas full of Carnatic music, and the best filter coffee and dosa on the subcontinent. It's less polished than Bangalore and all the better for it. Joy Plus balances temple mornings, museum afternoons and the coastal road south to Mahabalipuram.

Getting around
Chennai International Airport is 20 km southwest, linked by metro and taxi in 30 to 50 minutes. The metro is modern, cheap and expanding; suburban trains serve the coast, and Uber and Ola autos are plentiful. Traffic is heavy from 8-11am and 5-9pm, so plan long crosstown hops outside those windows.
Safety
Chennai is one of India's safest big cities, including for solo female travellers, though standard precautions apply after dark. The bigger challenges are heat and humidity, so hydrate and take midday breaks, and April to June is genuinely punishing. Dress modestly at temples, remove shoes before entering, and note some inner sanctums are open to Hindus only. Cyclone season runs October to December.
Frequently asked questions
Is Chennai worth visiting?
Yes, if you care about temples, food and living classical culture. It's the best base for Tamil Nadu's temple trail, has South India's finest vegetarian eating, and Mahabalipuram's UNESCO shore temples sit an hour away.
How many days do you need in Chennai?
Three to four. One for Mylapore and the Marina, one for Fort St George, the museum and T Nagar shopping, one full day for Mahabalipuram, and a fourth for DakshinaChitra, Besant Nagar or a concert.
When is the best time to visit Chennai?
November to February, when temperatures sit in the mid-20s and December brings the Margazhi music and dance season. March to June is very hot and humid, and October to December can bring heavy cyclonic rain.
Is Chennai safe for solo female travellers?
It's regarded as one of India's safer metros, with a relatively conservative and calm street culture. Dress modestly, use app-based cabs after dark, avoid empty beaches at night and keep to busy areas, and most travellers report an easy experience.
How do you get from Chennai to Mahabalipuram?
It's about 55 km down the East Coast Road, roughly 90 minutes by taxi (1,500-2,500 rupees each way) or a cheap ECR bus from Koyambedu. Many visitors combine it with DakshinaChitra and the Cholamandal Artists' Village on the same run.
What food is Chennai famous for?
Filter coffee, idli, ghee roast dosa, sambar and coconut chutney define the mornings, while Chettinad curries, Ambur and Dindigul biryani, and banana-leaf meals rule the afternoons. Beach snacks like sundal and bajji round out the evening.
Is Chennai or Bangalore better to visit?
Chennai for temples, classical arts, beaches and traditional South Indian food; Bangalore for a cooler climate, craft beer, cafes and nightlife. Travellers focused on heritage and Tamil culture should choose Chennai.
