Downtown, Ohio City and Tremont are served by RTA buses and the HealthLine bus rapid transit on Euclid. For University Circle and the lakefront parks, Uber is quickest. Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is 20 minutes west of downtown. The city is compact enough that most visitors use a mix of walking, transit and short rideshares rather than renting a car.
Safety
Downtown Cleveland, Ohio City, Tremont, University Circle and the lakefront are safe and increasingly vibrant. As in any US city, avoid isolated spots after dark, lock your car, and use rideshare for late nights. The main east-side entertainment districts are well policed. Winters are cold and windy off the lake, so plan indoor attractions from November through March.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in Cleveland?
Two to three days. One day for the Rock Hall and downtown waterfront; a second for the Cleveland Museum of Art, West Side Market and Ohio City; a third for Tremont, Cuyahoga Valley National Park or the Cleveland Orchestra.
Is Cleveland worth visiting?
Yes. It has a world-class free art museum, a definitive rock museum, excellent food markets, craft breweries and a revitalized lakefront. It's also much cheaper and less crowded than Chicago or New York.
When is the best time to visit Cleveland?
May to October for lakefront events, outdoor dining and the best park weather. Summer is festival season; fall brings crisp air and fewer crowds. Winter is cold and snowy, but ideal for museums and the orchestra.
Is Cleveland safe for tourists?
Yes, in the main visitor areas: downtown, Ohio City, Tremont, University Circle and the lakefront. Use standard urban precautions, avoid poorly lit or empty areas after dark, and use rideshare for late nights. Car break-ins are the most common issue; don't leave valuables visible.
What food is Cleveland famous for?
The Polish Boy, pierogi, corned beef sandwiches, craft beer and the broader comfort-food culture of the West Side Market. Cleveland has a strong Polish, Hungarian, Italian and Irish food heritage.
Is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame worth it?
Yes, for music fans it's the headline attraction. Allow 3 to 4 hours, and buy tickets in advance. The building itself is an I.M. Pei design on the lake, and the exhibits span the full history of rock and its influences.
Do you need a car in Cleveland?
Not necessarily. Downtown, Ohio City and Tremont are reachable by bus and the HealthLine, and rideshares are cheap. A car is helpful only if you plan to visit Cuyahoga Valley National Park or the suburbs, or travel outside the city.
