Darjeeling drapes itself over a Himalayan ridge at 2,050 metres, surrounded by emerald tea gardens and facing the 8,586 metre wall of Kanchenjunga. The toy train still puffs up from the plains, monks debate at Ghoom Monastery, and dawn at Tiger Hill delivers one of Asia's great sunrises. Getting around

Bagdogra airport is 70 kilometres away (3 hours by shared jeep or taxi); the toy train from New Jalpaiguri takes 7 hours but is an experience in itself. Within town, everything is on foot: steep lanes and steps, no cars in the center. Shared jeeps run to Kalimpong, Gangtok and Mirik.

Safety

Darjeeling is safe and welcoming, including for solo women, with the usual Indian hill town caveats: roads are winding (carry motion sickness tablets), weather changes fast (layers and rain gear year round), and political strikes in the Gorkhaland movement occasionally close shops; check local news. Altitude is moderate, so most visitors feel fine after a day.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do I need in Darjeeling?

Three to four days: one for Chowrasta, the mall road and tea tastings, one early morning for Tiger Hill, Ghoom and the Batasia Loop, one for a tea estate tour and the zoo or mountaineering institute, and a spare for the Peace Pagoda, Lamahatta or just cafe hopping in the mist.

How do I get to Darjeeling?

Fly to Bagdogra (direct from Delhi, Kolkata and others), then take a shared jeep or taxi 3 hours up to Darjeeling. The romantic option is the toy train from New Jalpaiguri, about 7 hours on the full run; most visitors ride the shorter Darjeeling to Ghoom joyride instead.

When is the best time to visit Darjeeling?

March to May brings clear skies, rhododendrons and the first flush tea harvest; October to November has the crispest mountain views after the monsoon. December to February is cold but quiet and often clear. June to September is monsoon: mist, leeches and landslide risk, though the town is at its greenest.

Is the Darjeeling toy train worth it?

Yes. The two hour Darjeeling to Ghoom joyride includes the Batasia Loop with Kanchenjunga views and the railway museum; steam hauled departures are the most atmospheric. Book online via Indian Railways well ahead in season, as the small trains sell out.

What is the first flush and can I visit a tea estate?

First flush is the spring harvest (March to April), producing Darjeeling's most prized, floral tea. Estates like Happy Valley (walking distance from town) and Makaibari offer tours of the factory and tastings year round. Expect to pay a small fee for the tour; the tasting rooms are generous.

Is Darjeeling safe for solo travellers?

Generally yes: it is a small, friendly hill town used to tourists, and solo women travellers are common. Standard precautions apply: avoid isolated paths after dark, agree taxi fares beforehand, and keep an eye on local news during occasional political strikes, which are peaceful but can close transport.

What does Darjeeling cost per day?

Darjeeling is budget friendly: guesthouses $10 to $30, heritage hotels $60 to $120, momos and thukpa meals $2 to $4, tea tastings $3 to $8, and the toy train joyride about $10 to $15. A comfortable mid range day runs $35 to $55 including a good hotel and estate tour.
