Galveston, United States travel guide
Victorian mansions, 32 miles of Gulf beach and Texas's cruise-ship island.
- Best time to visit: April-June, September-October
- Average daily budget: $130 to $320 USD
- Ideal trip length: 2 to 3 days
Galveston is a barrier island with a strange, brilliant past: once the richest city in Texas, flattened by the deadliest hurricane in US history in 1900, and rebuilt behind a seawall that now doubles as the longest continuous sidewalk in the country. The Strand's iron-front buildings and Broadway's mansions make it a genuine architectural destination, and the beaches, pleasure pier and cruise terminal keep it busy year-round.

Getting around
Galveston is about an hour south of Houston (IAH or HOU airports) by car, and a car is the practical way to reach and cross the island. Seawall Boulevard is fully walkable and bikeable, with rental surreys everywhere. The free Bolivar ferry runs 24 hours to the peninsula. Cruise passengers can walk to the Strand from the terminal.
Safety
Galveston is generally safe, with standard caution on the seawall late at night. Gulf water here is brown from Mississippi sediment, not pollution, but rip currents and jellyfish are real; follow flag warnings. Summer heat and humidity are punishing, and hurricane season from June to November is taken seriously here for good reason.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best time to visit Galveston?
April to June and September to October bring warm water, lower humidity and fewer crowds. July and August are hot, humid and packed. Winter is mild (12-18C), quiet and cheap, and Mardi Gras in February plus Dickens on the Strand in December are the island's biggest events.
Are Galveston beaches nice?
They are pleasant and easy rather than Caribbean-pretty: the water is brown from Mississippi River sediment, not pollution, and the sand is tan. Stewart Beach and East Beach are family and party beaches respectively, while the West End and state park offer quieter, cleaner stretches.
How far is Galveston from Houston?
About 50 miles, or an hour by car on I-45 without traffic. There is no train, so drive, take a shuttle or use a rideshare. Many Houstonians make it a day trip, which is why weekend afternoons on the causeway can be slow.
How many days do you need in Galveston?
Two days covers the Strand, Bishop's Palace, the seawall and a beach afternoon. A third day lets you add Moody Gardens, the state park or the Bolivar ferry. Families renting a beach house often stay a full week.
Is Galveston walkable?
The Strand and the East End historic district are very walkable, and Seawall Boulevard has a continuous 10-mile promenade for walking and biking. Between those zones, and out to the West End, you need a car or rideshare.
What happened in the 1900 Galveston hurricane?
An unnamed Category 4 hurricane killed an estimated 6,000-8,000 people, the deadliest natural disaster in US history. Survivors built the seawall and physically raised the entire island by up to 17 feet using dredged sand. Several museums and memorials tell the story.
Is Galveston good for a cruise departure stay?
Yes. It is the fourth-busiest cruise port in the US, and most lines let you park near the terminal. Arriving a night early is smart: stay on the seawall or near the Strand, both within 10 minutes of the port, and avoid I-45 traffic on sailing day.
