Gili Islands, Indonesia travel guide
Three car-free islands off Lombok with turtles, bikes and no engines at all.
- Best time to visit: May-September
- Average daily budget: $35 to $100 USD
- Ideal trip length: 3 to 4 days
Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air sit in a line off north-west Lombok, and none of them allows cars or motorbikes. You walk, cycle or take a horse cart, the whole circuit of each island takes an hour or two, and the reef starts a few metres from the sand.

Getting around
There are no motor vehicles. You walk, rent a bicycle for about $4 a day, or use a cidomo horse cart. Between islands, the public hopper boat runs a few times daily for around $2 to $4, while fast boats connect to Bali (Padangbai or Serangan) in 1.5-2.5 hours for $25 to $45.
Safety
Crime is low but there is no police station on Meno or Air and only a small post on Trawangan, so lock valuables away. Currents between the islands are strong: snorkel with the drift, not against it. Medical care is basic, the nearest hyperbaric chamber is on Lombok or Bali, and mushroom drinks sold openly on Trawangan cause most of the incidents involving travellers.
Frequently asked questions
Which Gili island should you stay on?
Trawangan for nightlife, dive schools and the widest choice of food. Gili Air for a balance of quiet beaches and enough restaurants to keep you happy for a week. Gili Meno for near-total silence and the best turtle snorkelling. Many people split their stay, since hopper boats take 10 to 20 minutes.
How do you get to the Gili Islands from Bali?
Fast boats leave Padangbai, Serangan and Amed daily, taking 1.5-2.5 hours and costing $25 to $45 each way including hotel transfer. Crossings can be rough in the afternoon or during the rainy season. Alternatively, fly to Lombok and take the 20-minute public boat from Bangsal harbour for a couple of dollars.
How many days do you need in the Gilis?
Three days is the sweet spot: one to settle in and cycle your island, one for a full snorkel trip covering all three islands, and one for diving or doing nothing. Divers doing a certification course need four. Any less and the boat travel eats the trip.
When is the best time to visit the Gili Islands?
May to September is dry with the calmest seas and best visibility, peaking in July and August. April and October are quieter shoulder months with good conditions. December to February brings rain, choppier fast-boat crossings and occasional cancellations, though prices drop noticeably.
Can you see turtles in the Gili Islands?
Yes, green and hawksbill turtles are common, particularly off Gili Meno's east coast and at Turtle Point near Trawangan. You can often see them from the surface while snorkelling in 3-8 metres of water. Keep at least two metres away and never touch or ride them.
Are the Gili Islands expensive?
They are pricier than mainland Lombok because everything arrives by boat. Fan rooms run $15 to $25, air-conditioned bungalows $40 to $80, warung meals $3 to $5 and restaurant dinners $10 to $18. A snorkel day trip costs about $15 to $25 and a fun dive around $35 to $45.
Are the Gili Islands safe?
Generally yes, with no traffic and very little violent crime. The main risks are strong currents between islands, theft from unlocked rooms, and drink or drug incidents on Trawangan. There are no ATMs on Meno and few on Air, and medical facilities are minimal, so bring cash and travel insurance.
