The Gold Coast is Australia's holiday capital: 57km of beaches, a wall of high-rises at Surfers Paradise, and a rainforest hinterland 30 minutes inland. Safety

Very safe. Swim between the flags - the surf beaches have strong rips. Surfers Paradise nightlife gets rowdy late on weekends. Sun protection is essential; the UV is intense even on cloudy days.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need on the Gold Coast?

Four to five days lets you mix beach time, one theme park and a hinterland day trip without rushing. Add a couple more if you're travelling with kids who want multiple parks, or if you want to surf every morning and explore the rainforest properly.

Is the Gold Coast good for families?

It's one of Australia's top family destinations - patrolled beaches, four major theme parks (Movie World, Sea World, Dreamworld, Wet'n'Wild), wildlife sanctuaries and calm creek swimming spots like Tallebudgera. Most accommodation is apartment-style with kitchens and pools, which suits families well.

When is the best time to visit the Gold Coast?

Spring (September-November) and autumn (March-May) bring warm, dry days ideal for beaches and walks without summer's humidity and crowds. Winter (June-August) is mild, sunny and great for whale watching. Summer is hot, humid and busy, with afternoon storms common.

Surfers Paradise or Burleigh Heads - where should I stay?

Surfers Paradise for nightlife, high-rise beachfront and being central; Burleigh Heads for a calmer, more stylish base with a national-park headland, top cafés and a great surf beach. Families and couples often prefer Burleigh or Broadbeach; younger travellers gravitate to Surfers.

Is the Gold Coast just theme parks and beaches?

Far from it. The hinterland - Springbrook, Lamington and Tamborine Mountain - has rainforest walks, waterfalls, glow-worm caves and wineries, all within 30 to 60 minutes of the coast. There's also a strong café and craft-beer scene around Burleigh and Miami.

How do I get from Gold Coast Airport to the beaches?

Gold Coast Airport (Coolangatta) is right by the southern beaches. The G:link light rail connects via tram and bus, ride-shares and taxis are plentiful, and many hotels offer shuttles. From Brisbane Airport it's about a 90-minute drive or a train-plus-tram combination.

Can you see wildlife on the Gold Coast?

Yes - Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and other parks let you hand-feed lorikeets and meet koalas and kangaroos. In winter (June-October) humpback whales migrate past the coast and boat tours run daily. The hinterland has pademelons, gliders and glow worms in the rainforest at night.
