Getting around
Owen Roberts International Airport is minutes from George Town and Seven Mile Beach. Public minibuses are cheap and run frequently along the main routes from George Town. Taxis are reliable but expensive and unmetered, so confirm fares first. Renting a car (driving on the left) is the best way to explore the East End, Rum Point and West Bay. The island is small, so drives are short. Many resorts are walkable to the beach.
Safety
Grand Cayman is one of the safest destinations in the Caribbean, with very low crime and an upscale, well-managed tourism scene. Standard precautions apply: secure valuables and don't leave items on the beach unattended. The main risks are ocean-related, so respect currents, snorkel within marked areas, and follow dive-boat guidance. The sun is strong, so hydrate and use reef-safe sunscreen. Tap water is safe to drink.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in Grand Cayman?
Four to six days lets you enjoy Seven Mile Beach, visit Stingray City, dive or snorkel the reefs, relax at Rum Point and explore George Town and the East End. Three days covers the must-dos for a short trip, but a full week suits the island's relaxed pace and water activities, especially given the cost of getting there and the appeal of multiple beach and dive days.
Is Grand Cayman good for solo travellers?
Yes. It's one of the safest Caribbean destinations, easy to navigate by bus or rental car, and English-speaking. Dive schools, snorkel trips and Stingray City tours make meeting people simple, and Seven Mile Beach is welcoming for relaxing alone. It's pricier and quieter at night than party islands, so it suits solo travellers who want safety, great diving and beaches over nightlife.
When is the best time to visit Grand Cayman?
December to April is the dry, sunny peak season with the calmest seas and best diving visibility, though it's the busiest and most expensive. May to November is hotter and more humid, with hurricane season from June to November. The shoulder months of May and late November often offer excellent weather, clear water and lower prices with fewer crowds, making them a sweet spot for many visitors.
What is Stingray City?
Stingray City is Grand Cayman's most famous attraction, a shallow sandbar in the North Sound where you can stand in waist-deep, crystal-clear water surrounded by dozens of gentle wild southern stingrays. Reached by boat tour, it lets you feed, touch and swim with the rays, which have gathered here for generations. It's a magical, family-friendly experience and one of the Caribbean's signature wildlife encounters.
Is Grand Cayman expensive?
Yes, it's one of the more expensive Caribbean destinations, with upscale resorts, pricey dining and a high cost of living as a financial centre. You can manage the budget by staying in condos with kitchens, eating at George Town food trucks and local fish fries, using the cheap public minibuses, and snorkelling from public beaches. Even so, Grand Cayman best suits travellers comfortable with a higher overall spend.
Is Grand Cayman good for diving?
Outstanding. Grand Cayman is one of the world's premier dive destinations, with exceptional water clarity, dramatic coral walls like the famous Bloody Bay Wall (on sister island Little Cayman), wrecks such as the USS Kittiwake, and abundant marine life. Numerous dive operators cater to all levels, from beginners to technical divers, and shore diving is excellent. Snorkellers also find easy access to vibrant reefs and Stingray City.
Do you need a car in Grand Cayman?
Not essential if you're staying on Seven Mile Beach, where you can walk to the beach, restaurants and shops and use cheap public minibuses for George Town. However, a rental car (driving on the left) is the best way to explore Rum Point, the East End, Crystal Caves and West Bay at your own pace, since taxis are expensive. Many visitors rent for part of their stay to see the wider island.
