Guilin, China travel guide
Karst peaks and the Li River: China's most painted landscape, with rice terraces and bamboo rafts.
- Best time to visit: April-May & September-October
- Average daily budget: $40 to $90 USD
- Ideal trip length: 3 to 4 days
Guilin's limestone towers rising out of mist and river have been China's postcard landscape for a thousand years, painted on scrolls and printed on the 20-yuan note. The city itself is pleasant, but the magic is downstream in Yangshuo and up in the Longji rice terraces. Joy Plus strings together the Li River cruise, bamboo rafting and terrace hikes into a plan timed for the best light and the fewest tour buses.

Getting around
Guilin Liangjiang Airport is 28 km from the city, about 45 minutes by taxi or airport bus. High-speed trains link Guilin to Guangzhou in 2.5 to 3 hours and to Yangshuo station (near Xingping) in 25 minutes. In Yangshuo, rent bikes or e-scooters for the countryside; for the Longji terraces, take the direct tourist buses from Guilin or Yangshuo, around 2.5 to 3 hours.
Safety
Guilin and Yangshuo are very safe with low crime; the main issues are tourist-marked prices and pushy touts around West Street. Agree taxi and raft prices in advance or use the DiDi app. Karst trails can be slippery after rain, river levels affect rafting in the wet season, and summer heat and humidity are serious, so carry water on hikes.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in Guilin?
Three to four days: one for Guilin city's lakes and hills, one for the Li River cruise down to Yangshuo, one for Yulong River rafting and cycling, and one for the Longji rice terraces if you can spare it.
Is the Li River cruise worth it?
Yes. The four-hour cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo passes the region's most famous karst scenery, including the view printed on the 20-yuan note. Book a boat with an upper-deck viewing area, or take the train and hike to the Xianggong Hill viewpoint instead.
When is the best time to visit Guilin?
April to May and September to October offer the best mix of mild temperatures, green landscapes and manageable rain. Summer is hot and humid with heavy showers that raise the rivers, while winter is chilly, misty and quiet with the lowest prices.
Guilin or Yangshuo: where should I stay?
Yangshuo. The scenery, rafting, cycling and nightlife are all there, and Guilin city works as a one-night gateway on arrival. Many travellers now skip Guilin entirely, taking the train straight to Yangshuo station near Xingping.
How do you get to the Longji rice terraces?
Direct tourist buses run from Guilin (and in season from Yangshuo) to Ping'an and Dazhai villages in about 2.5 to 3 hours. Stay overnight in a stilted guesthouse so you can walk the terraces at sunrise before the day-trippers arrive.
Is Guilin safe for tourists?
Yes, it's a very safe, well-touristed region with low crime. Watch for inflated prices and touts in Yangshuo, slippery karst trails after rain, and strong summer sun and humidity. DiDi ride-hailing and metered taxis keep transport honest.
Do I need a visa to visit Guilin?
Most travellers need a Chinese tourist visa arranged in advance, though citizens of many countries now enjoy visa-free entry for 15 to 30 days under China's expanded waiver scheme, and 72/144-hour transit rules apply in some cities. Check the latest rules for your passport before booking.
