Gyeongju, South Korea travel guide
Korea's ancient Silla capital of tombs, temples and cherry blossoms.
- Best time to visit: April and October to November
- Average daily budget: $60 to $110
- Ideal trip length: 2 to 3 days
Gyeongju is Korea's open air museum: for nearly a thousand years it was the capital of the Silla kingdom, and today royal tumuli grass mounds, the Anapji pond pavilions, Cheomseongdae observatory and Bulguksa temple fill a walkable valley. In April the Bomun Lake and tomb parks erupt in cherry blossom, and in autumn the ginkgo avenues turn gold, making this small city one of Korea's most photogenic escapes.

Getting around
KTX-Eum trains from Seoul take about 2 hours to Singyeongju station, 20 minutes from downtown; express buses from Seoul's Nambu terminal take 3 hours to Gyeongju terminal. The city center is walkable, and buses 10 and 11 link the tomb parks, museum and Bulguksa (50 minutes). Bikes and e-scooters work well around Bomun and the fields.
Safety
Gyeongju is very safe and easy. Main notes: buses to Bulguksa and Seokguram run every 30 to 40 minutes but stop early evening, spring and autumn weekends bring heavy domestic crowds, and the historic sites involve gravel paths, so wear real shoes. Carry cash for markets; cards work almost everywhere else.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do I need in Gyeongju?
Two days covers the essentials: day one for the tomb parks, Cheomseongdae, Anapji at night and Hwangnidan-gil; day two for Bulguksa, Seokguram and the museum. Three days lets you add Bomun Lake, Namsan trails or a slow blossom season pace.
How do I get to Gyeongju from Seoul?
The fastest option is the KTX-Eum from Seoul or Cheongnyangni to Singyeongju station, about 2 hours, then a 20 minute bus or taxi into town. Express buses from Seoul's Nambu terminal take about 3 hours and drop closer to the center. Driving takes about 3.5 hours.
When is cherry blossom season in Gyeongju?
Usually late March to early April, with the Bomun Lake festival and the tomb park's blossom tunnels peaking in the first week of April. It varies by a week or two each year; book accommodation a month ahead, since this is one of Korea's most popular blossom destinations.
Can I visit Bulguksa and Seokguram without a car?
Yes. Buses 10, 11 and 12 run from downtown to Bulguksa in about 50 minutes, and a connecting bus continues up to Seokguram every 30 to 40 minutes. Allow half a day for both sites, and check return times, since the last buses leave the mountain around 6 to 7pm.
Is Gyeongju worth visiting versus Busan or Seoul?
For history and calm, yes: it is completely different from the big cities, an easy 30 to 50 minute KTX or bus ride from Busan and 2 hours from Seoul. Most travellers pair Gyeongju with Busan, spending two days among tombs, temples and hanok cafes.
Where should I stay in Gyeongju?
Hwangnidan-gil and the old town put you steps from tombs, cafes and night views of Anapji, with hanok stays and guesthouses. Bomun Lake suits resort style hotels and blossom walks. Singyeongju station is convenient for arrival but 20 minutes from the sights, so stay downtown.
What does Gyeongju cost per day?
Expect $60 to $90 a day mid range: hanok guesthouses or hotels from $50 to $90 a night, ssambap set lunches around $12 to $18, entry fees of $2 to $5 per site, and buses under $3. Budget travellers can manage $45, while blossom season premium rooms push $120 or more.
