Hampi, India travel guide
A ruined Hindu capital scattered across a boulder desert.
- Best time to visit: November-February
- Average daily budget: $25 to $90 USD
- Ideal trip length: 3 to 4 days
Hampi was Vijayanagara, one of the largest cities on earth in the 1500s, until it was sacked and abandoned. What remains is 4,000 monuments spread over 40 square kilometres of granite boulders and banana plantations, with the Tungabhadra river cutting through the middle. It is a UNESCO site that still feels half-discovered.

Getting around
Bicycles at 100 rupees a day and scooters at 300-400 are the standard way to cover the ruins, though the far bank now requires the long road bridge rather than taking a bike on the ferry. Autos charge 1,200-1,800 rupees for a full-day ruins circuit. The river ferry runs roughly 8am to 5.30pm for 50 rupees. Hosapete, 13km away, has the train station.
Safety
Hampi is safe and heavily visited, with theft rare and locals used to travellers. Heat is the real danger: plan around midday from March onward and carry more water than you think. Rocks get slippery and hills are unlit, so carry a torch for sunrise and sunset climbs. Hampi Bazaar is a dry, alcohol-free zone, and the ferry stopping at dusk catches people out most nights.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in Hampi?
Three days is right: one for the sacred centre and Vittala Temple, one for the royal enclosure and museum, and one on the far bank for Sanapur Lake, Anegundi and Anjanadri Hill. Two days is doable if you hire a scooter and start early. Boulderers stay a week or more.
How do you get to Hampi?
Hosapete Junction is 13km away and connects by overnight train to Bengaluru, Goa and Hyderabad; an auto into Hampi costs about 300 rupees. Sleeper buses from Bengaluru take eight hours for 800-1,500 rupees and from Goa around ten. Hubli airport is three hours away, Bengaluru six.
When is the best time to visit Hampi?
November to February is the only truly comfortable window, with days around 28C and cool mornings. March to May is brutal, regularly above 38C, which makes walking the ruins unpleasant by 10am. The June to September monsoon is green and quiet with moderate rain and a fuller river.
Should you stay in Hampi Bazaar or across the river?
Hampi Bazaar puts you walking distance from the main ruins and is better for a short, sights-focused trip. Virupapur Gaddi across the river is greener, calmer and better for longer stays, bouldering and swimming, but the ferry stops around 5.30pm so evenings are committed to that side.
Is Hampi good for bouldering?
It is one of the best bouldering areas in the world, with thousands of granite problems across every grade, most on the far bank near Virupapur Gaddi and Sanapur. The season runs November to February. Bring your own pads and shoes, as rental is limited, and hire a local guide to find the established lines.
Is Hampi expensive?
It is one of India's cheapest destinations. Guesthouse rooms cost $8 to $20, mid-range hotels in Kamalapur $30 to $60, and meals $1.50-$4. A bicycle is around $1.20 a day, a scooter $4, and the combined monument ticket for Vittala and the royal enclosure 600 rupees for foreigners. Budget $25 to $35 a day.
Do you need a guide in Hampi?
Not to enjoy it, but the ruins make far more sense with one. Licensed guides charge 1,500-2,500 rupees for a half-day and can explain the layout of the vanished city, which is otherwise hard to read. Alternatively use an audio guide app offline, since mobile signal is patchy among the boulders.
