Getting around
Fly into Jackson Hole Airport, the only commercial airport inside a US national park, 15 minutes from town. A rental car is essential for the parks; winter driving requires confidence in snow. START Bus connects Jackson, Teton Village and the airport cheaply. Downtown Jackson is walkable, and summer traffic into the parks builds by 9am.
Safety
This is bear and moose country: carry bear spray on every trail, make noise, and never approach wildlife, moose injure more people than bears. Afternoon thunderstorms hit the high peaks daily in summer, so be below treeline by noon. Altitude (1,900m town, 3,185m tram top) dehydrates fast. Winter brings avalanche terrain and -25°C cold snaps.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best time to visit Jackson Hole?
Two peak windows: mid-December to March for skiing, and mid-June to September for hiking, wildlife and both national parks. July and August are busiest and priciest; September brings golden aspens, elk bugling and thinner crowds. April-May and November are mud-and-closure shoulder seasons when much shuts down.
How many days do you need in Jackson Hole?
Four to six days. Summer: two for Grand Teton, one or two for Yellowstone, one for a float trip or rodeo. Winter: three to four ski days plus a National Elk Refuge sleigh ride or snowmobile day. Add a buffer day for weather in either season.
Should you stay in Jackson or Teton Village?
Winter skiers should stay in Teton Village for slope-side access; summer visitors and foodies do better in the town of Jackson, with its restaurants, galleries and lower prices. They're 20 minutes apart, connected by the START Bus, so it's not a dealbreaker either way.
Is Jackson Hole good for beginner skiers?
Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is famous for expert terrain, but about 40% of its runs suit beginners and intermediates, and the ski school is excellent. True first-timers often prefer nearby Snow King in town or Grand Targhee over the pass. Experts, meanwhile, consider it the best inbounds terrain in North America.
Can you do Yellowstone as a day trip from Jackson?
Yes, but it's long: Old Faithful is about 2.5 hours each way in summer traffic. A full day covers the Lower Loop's geysers, Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and Hayden Valley wildlife. With two or more Yellowstone days, stay inside the park instead. Winter access requires a guided snowcoach from the south entrance.
Why is Jackson Hole so expensive?
Tiny supply, huge demand and real wealth: the valley is 97% protected land, so lodging is scarce while billionaires bid up everything else. Expect $400 to $900 a night in peak seasons. Save by visiting in September or early December, staying in town rather than at resorts, and booking flights into Salt Lake City plus a 4.5-hour drive.
What wildlife can you see in Jackson Hole?
Moose, elk, bison, black and grizzly bears, pronghorn, wolves, bald eagles and otters, often all in one dawn drive. The National Elk Refuge hosts 7,000 wintering elk beside the town. Best spots: Oxbow Bend, Schwabacher Landing, Moose-Wilson Road and the Gros Ventre flats at first light.
