Key Largo, United States travel guide

Gateway to the Florida Keys and America's diving capital.

  • Best time to visit: November-April
  • Average daily budget: $160 to $400 USD
  • Ideal trip length: 2 to 4 days

Key Largo is the first and largest of the Florida Keys, an hour south of Miami, famous as the Dive Capital of the World thanks to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and the living coral barrier reef just offshore. Life here happens on the water: snorkeling over brain coral, kayaking mangrove creeks, tarpon feeding at the dock, and sunset over Florida Bay. It is unglamorous, salty and easy to love.

Getting around

You need a car: the Overseas Highway (US-1) is the only road, and everything is measured in mile markers. Key Largo is 60 miles and about 75 minutes from Miami airport, longer on Friday afternoons. Boats handle the real sightseeing, so book charters in advance. The free on-demand Freebee electric carts cover some areas.

Safety

Crime is low, but the environment demands respect. Never touch or stand on coral, use reef-safe sunscreen, and watch for the dive flags that mark snorkelers. Boat wakes and manatee zones are heavily enforced. Summer thunderstorms build fast, and June-November is hurricane season, so keep plans flexible and insurance current.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time to visit Key Largo?

November to April is the dry season with 75-80°F days, low humidity and calm seas, peak season in every sense. May and late October are cheaper and still lovely. Summer brings heat, afternoon storms and calm glassy water that divers love, plus hurricane risk from August onward.

How many days do you need in Key Largo?

Two days covers a snorkel or dive trip, a mangrove kayak and a sunset. Three to four lets you add a fishing charter, a second reef morning and day trips to Islamorada or south toward Key West. It pairs naturally with two or three nights in Key West.

Is Key Largo or Key West better?

Different trips. Key Largo is for the water itself: the reef, diving, fishing and quiet. Key West, 100 miles south, is for nightlife, history and the Duval Street scene. Most visitors split the drive, and Key Largo makes the better first stop from Miami.

Can you snorkel in Key Largo without a boat?

Shore snorkeling is limited because the beaches are few and shallow. The famous reefs are 3-6 miles offshore, so boat trips are the way in. Pennekamp runs its own snorkel boats, and Cannon Beach inside the park offers easy shore snorkeling over a small wreck and sponges for beginners.

Is Key Largo good for beginner divers?

One of the best places in the country. The shallow reefs at 20-30 feet, warm water and dozens of dive shops with certification courses make it ideal for a first open-water certification. Snorkelers see the same Christ of the Abyss statue and coral heads from the surface.

How far is Key Largo from Miami?

About 60 miles and 75 minutes via the Florida Turnpike and US-1 in normal traffic. Friday afternoons and holiday weekends can double that, so leave Miami early. There is no practical public transport, making a rental car essentially mandatory.

Are there beaches in Key Largo?

Small ones. The Keys are mangrove and coral islands, not sand islands, so Key Largo's beaches are compact park strands like Cannon Beach and Far Beach in Pennekamp. For classic long sand beaches, day-trip to Bahia Honda State Park an hour south, one of America's best.
