Cobbled Naxi old town beneath Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

  • Best time to visit: April to June and September to October
  • Average daily budget: $45 to $85

Lijiang is one of China's best preserved old towns, a UNESCO maze of canals, willow draped bridges and Naxi wooden houses at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, a 5,596 metre glacier capped giant. Morning: Relax at Black Dragon Pool. The classic reflection pond with the snow mountain framed by the Deyue Pavilion, best before 9am for clear water and light.

Afternoon: Explore Dayan Old Town, The main UNESCO quarter with Sifang Square, canals, guesthouses and nightlife; atmospheric but busiest.

Evening: Wander Dayan's canals and Sifang Square at dusk. Follow the water from the Black Dragon Pool park through lantern lit lanes as the evening music starts.

Getting around

Lijiang Sanyi Airport is 30 minutes from the old town; high speed trains reach Kunming in about 3 hours and Dali in 2. Old towns are car free, so hotels meet you at gates with carts; taxis and Didi cover the 4 to 10 kilometre hops between Dayan, Shuhe and Baisha. Tours or buses run to Tiger Leaping Gorge and the snow mountain.

Safety

Lijiang is safe but sits at 2,400 metres with day trips to 4,500 metres: pace your first day, and take the provided oxygen on the Glacier Park cable car if needed. Cobbles and canal edges need care after rain and at night. Book mountain cable cars ahead in holidays, and confirm your guesthouse can register foreign passports.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do I need in Lijiang?

Three to four days: one for the old towns (Dayan, Shuhe, Baisha), one for Jade Dragon Snow Mountain with the cable car and show, and one for Black Dragon Pool plus a Tiger Leaping Gorge side trip. Two days is possible but leaves the mountain or the gorge out.

Do I need to worry about altitude in Lijiang?

Lijiang itself sits at 2,400 metres, high enough for mild breathlessness the first day. The Glacier Park cable car tops out at 4,506 metres, where oxygen canisters are rented and pacing matters. Most travellers adapt fine; avoid alcohol on day one and climb the mountain on day two or three.

How do I get to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain?

The scenic area is 30 to 40 minutes north of the old town. You need a timed ticket for the Glacier Park cable car (booked a day or more ahead in season), plus the park entry fee and, in peak times, a spot on the park shuttle. Tours bundle tickets, transfer and the Impression show.

Is Lijiang too touristy?

Dayan old town's core is busy, especially evenings and Chinese holidays, but the crowds are easy to escape: stay in Shuhe or Baisha, walk the back lanes before 9am, and day trip to Yuhu or the gorge. Many travellers rate early mornings in Dayan among China's most beautiful walks.

How do I get to Lijiang from Kunming or Dali?

High speed trains run from Kunming in about 3 hours and from Dali in about 2 hours, both arriving at Lijiang station 30 minutes from the old town. Flights from Kunming take 50 minutes. Buses are slow and rarely worth it now the rail line is open.

Can I visit Tiger Leaping Gorge from Lijiang in one day?

Yes: the upper gorge viewpoint is about 2 hours each way by bus or tour, and the boardwalk to the tiger rock takes an hour. The famous full high trail hike needs two days with a night at Naxi family or Tea Horse guesthouses; start it from Qiaotou on the way to Shangri La.

What does Lijiang cost per day?

Budget travellers spend $40 to $55 a day: guesthouse beds from $15, noodle and hotpot meals for $3 to $6, and buses between towns. Mid range courtyard hotels run $70 to $130, the snow mountain package is about $90 to $130 with cable car and show, and e-bikes or taxis are $5 to $15 a day.
