Manali, India travel guide

Himalayan valley town for snow, high passes and the road to Ladakh and Spiti.

  • Best time to visit: March-June and September-October
  • Average daily budget: $20 to $70 USD
  • Ideal trip length: 4 to 5 days

Manali sits at the head of the Kullu Valley with deodar forest on the slopes and snow peaks at the end of every street. Old Manali and Vashisht are the backpacker side, cafes, hot springs and slow mornings, while Mall Road is where Indian holidaymakers come for their first snow. It is also a launchpad: the Atal Tunnel opens Lahaul year-round, and the Manali-Leh highway is one of the great road trips on earth. Joy Plus builds the valley days and the passes around what is actually open.

Getting around

Overnight Volvo buses from Delhi take 12 to 14 hours to Manali; the nearest airport is Bhuntar, 50km south, with weather-dependent flights. Locally, shared autos and taxis run between Mall Road, Old Manali and Vashisht, and most of Old Manali is walkable. For Solang, Rohtang and Lahaul, hire a taxi or rent a Himalayan-style motorbike; Rohtang Pass requires a permit issued by quota.

Safety

Mountain roads are the real hazard: landslides are common in monsoon and night driving on the Leh or Spiti highways is best avoided. Anything above about 3,000m risks altitude sickness, so acclimatise before Rohtang, Spiti or Leh. River currents in the Beas are far stronger than they look, and drownings happen every season. Rent bikes only with a helmet and check the brakes yourself.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Manali?

Four is a good base: one to settle into Old Manali and Vashisht, one for Solang and the Atal Tunnel to Sissu, one for a hike like Jogini Falls or Hamta, and one for Naggar and the valley. Add several more if you plan to continue to Spiti or Leh.

When is the best time to visit Manali?

March to June for green valleys, open passes and pleasant days, and September to October for clear skies after the monsoon. December to February brings snow in town and is popular for that, though high passes shut. Avoid July and August, when heavy monsoon rain triggers landslides on the mountain roads.

When does it snow in Manali?

Reliable snow in the town itself falls from late December to February, with the heaviest usually in January. For snow outside those months, head up to Solang or through the Atal Tunnel into Lahaul, where patches survive into spring. Rohtang Pass normally opens around May and closes with the first heavy falls.

Do you need a permit for Rohtang Pass?

Yes. Vehicles need a permit issued online under a daily quota, and the pass is closed on a rotating maintenance day each week and through winter. The Atal Tunnel to Lahaul needs no permit and stays open most of the year, which is why most travellers now use it instead.

How do you get to Manali from Delhi?

Overnight Volvo or HRTC buses take 12 to 14 hours and cost roughly $12 to $25 USD, leaving Delhi in the evening and arriving at dawn. Flying to Bhuntar near Kullu takes about 90 minutes plus a 50-minute drive, but flights are frequently cancelled for weather. Private cars take 12 hours or so.

Is Manali good for solo travellers?

Very. Old Manali and Vashisht are full of hostels, cafes and trekking groups, so meeting people is easy, and the town is generally safe. Standard caution applies at night, and solo women should be selective about isolated guesthouses. Book treks and rides through established operators rather than street offers.

Can you drive from Manali to Leh?

Yes, and it is one of the world's great road trips: roughly 470km over passes above 5,000m, usually driven in two days with an overnight at Jispa, Sarchu or Keylong. The highway opens around late May and closes by October. Acclimatise first, and go with an experienced driver if you are not confident.
