Getting around

Most visitors fly into Montego Bay, about two hours west by road, or Kingston, roughly two hours south via the toll highway. In town, everything is walkable, and route taxis running fixed coastal routes are extremely cheap if you share. Licensed red-plate taxis are safer than unmarked cars and fares should be agreed in advance. Organised tours or a private driver are the easiest way to combine several inland attractions in one day.

Safety

Ocho Rios is one of Jamaica's more tourist-focused towns and the resort and attraction areas are generally fine, but petty theft, aggressive vendors and overcharging are common. Use licensed red-plate taxis rather than unmarked cars, avoid walking alone at night away from lit main streets, and be firm but polite with hustlers. Waterfall climbs are slippery, so wear grip shoes and follow guides. Watch for strong currents at open-sea beaches.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Ocho Rios?

Four to six days is plenty. That covers Dunn's River Falls, the Blue Hole and Secret Falls, bamboo rafting on the White River, a zip line or bobsled day at Mystic Mountain, and a couple of relaxed beach days. Add extra nights if you want a day trip to Nine Mile, Firefly or the quieter beaches east towards Oracabessa.

When is the best time to visit Ocho Rios?

November to April is the dry season with the most reliable sunshine and calm seas, and also the busiest cruise period. May and June are quieter with occasional showers and better prices. September and October are the wettest and carry the highest hurricane risk. Whatever the month, mornings are the best time to visit waterfalls before ships arrive.

Is Ocho Rios safe for tourists?

The main resort, beach and attraction areas are heavily used by visitors and generally fine during the day. Take normal precautions: use licensed red-plate taxis, avoid walking alone at night outside lit main areas, don't flash valuables and be prepared to decline persistent vendors politely. Booking excursions through your hotel or a reputable operator avoids most common scams.

Is Dunn's River Falls worth it?

Yes, if you time it right. Climbing 180 metres of terraced limestone with water rushing over you is genuinely fun and unlike anything else in Jamaica. Go at opening time or late afternoon on a day with few cruise ships in port, otherwise you will queue in a human chain. Wear water shoes with grip and leave valuables in a locker.

Is Ocho Rios or Montego Bay better?

Ocho Rios is better for adventure: waterfalls, rafting, zip lines and lush inland scenery all within a short drive. Montego Bay has the bigger airport, more beach resorts and a livelier nightlife strip. If you want to spend your days doing things rather than lying on sand, Ocho Rios wins. Many trips combine both, as they are about two hours apart.

How expensive is Ocho Rios?

Mid-range travellers spend roughly $90 to $180 a day including accommodation, food, transport and one paid attraction. Excursion tickets add up quickly, so book directly rather than through resort desks where possible. Eating at jerk pits, patty shops and local cook shops instead of resort restaurants cuts costs dramatically, and shared route taxis are far cheaper than private transfers.

Do you need a car in Ocho Rios?

Not really. The town is walkable, route taxis cover the coastal strip cheaply, and most attractions include transport or are easy to reach with a hired driver for the day. Jamaican roads can be potholed and driving is on the left with assertive local traffic, so many visitors prefer a private driver or organised tours to self-driving.
