Park City, United States travel guide
Two huge ski resorts, Sundance glamour and a silver-mining Main Street.
- Best time to visit: December-March, June-September
- Average daily budget: $250 to $700 USD
- Ideal trip length: 4 to 6 days
Park City is a 19th-century silver-mining town that grew into America's most accessible ski destination: 35 minutes from Salt Lake City airport, with Park City Mountain (the largest resort in the US) and Deer Valley next door. The Wasatch powder is famously light and dry, Main Street is lined with restored brick storefronts, and every January Sundance turns the whole place into a film festival. In summer it flips to mountain biking and hiking at a fraction of winter prices.

Getting around
Salt Lake City International (SLC) is 35 to 40 minutes away, with shared shuttles, rideshares and rental cars. Once here you rarely need a car: the free town bus network links Old Town, both resort bases and most condos every 15 to 20 minutes. Winter parking on Main Street is limited and snow tyres or AWD matter on canyon roads during storms.
Safety
Park City is very safe. The real issues are altitude (2,100m in town, 3,000m+ on the peaks), so hydrate and ease into day one, and mountain hazards: avalanche risk in the backcountry, cold exposure and sun intensity at elevation. Summer brings afternoon thunderstorms and occasional moose on the trails, which you should give a wide berth.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best time to visit Park City?
Mid-January to early March has the deepest, driest snow, though Sundance in late January and holiday weeks spike prices. December is festive but early-season. July to September is gorgeous and far cheaper, with hiking, biking and wildflowers. April and November are quiet shoulder months with limited operations.
How far is Park City from Salt Lake City airport?
About 32 miles, or 35 to 45 minutes by car on I-80. Shared shuttles, private transfers and rideshares all run frequently, and in winter the drive can slow during storms. It is the shortest airport-to-major-ski-resort transfer in the United States.
Park City Mountain or Deer Valley: which is better?
Park City Mountain is far larger (7,300 acres), allows snowboards and suits mixed groups and intermediates. Deer Valley is skiers-only, smaller, impeccably groomed, less crowded by design and more expensive, with the best on-mountain food in the US. Different lift passes cover each.
Do you need a car in Park City?
No. The free town bus connects Old Town, Canyons Village, Deer Valley and most lodging every 15 to 20 minutes, and airport shuttles handle arrivals. A car only helps for day trips to Salt Lake City, the Olympic Park or Midway, and winter parking is expensive and limited.
Is Park City expensive?
In winter, yes: peak lift tickets, ski-in lodging and Main Street dining make it one of the priciest US ski towns. Book multi-day passes months ahead, stay at Kimball Junction or Prospector on the bus route, and eat breakfast in your condo. Summer costs roughly half as much.
What is Sundance Film Festival like for visitors?
Late January brings thousands of filmgoers, closed streets and doubled hotel rates for about 10 days. It is fun if you want screenings and celebrity spotting, frustrating if you came purely to ski. Buy tickets in advance and book lodging months out, or simply avoid those dates.
What is there to do in Park City in summer?
Over 400 miles of mountain-bike and hiking trails, alpine slides and coasters, lift-served downhill riding, fly fishing on the Provo River, hot-air balloons and free concerts. Temperatures sit around 25-30C by day and drop to sweater weather at night, with lodging at a fraction of ski-season rates.
