Pondicherry, India travel guide
French colonial streets, Tamil temples and the Bay of Bengal.
- Best time to visit: October-March
- Average daily budget: $30 to $110 USD
- Ideal trip length: 3 to 4 days
Pondicherry was French until 1954 and has never quite let go: mustard-yellow villas with bougainvillea over the gates, street signs in two languages, and gendarme-red kepis still worn by the local police. Cross one canal west and you are in Tamil Nadu proper, all temple gopurams and filter coffee. The contrast is the whole point.

Getting around
White Town is small enough to walk in 20 minutes end to end. Rented scooters cost 300-400 rupees a day and are the standard way to reach Auroville and the beaches. Autos work for short hops at 60-150 rupees, usually negotiated. Chennai is the nearest airport, three to four hours away by bus for 200 rupees or taxi for around 3,500.
Safety
Pondicherry is relaxed and safe, including for solo women, though the usual India caution applies after dark on unlit beach roads. Traffic is the biggest risk, especially on scooters between town and Auroville. Promenade Beach is for walking, not swimming, because of rocks and currents. Alcohol is cheap here, which makes weekend nights rowdier than the town's image suggests.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in Pondicherry?
Three days is the sweet spot: one for White Town and the Tamil quarter on foot, one for Auroville and the northern beaches, and one for Paradise or Serenity beach. Add a fourth if you want a day trip to the shore temples at Mahabalipuram on the way back to Chennai.
How do you get to Pondicherry?
Chennai airport is the main gateway, three to four hours away. Government and private buses run constantly from Chennai's Koyambedu terminal for 150-400 rupees, and taxis cost around 3,500 rupees. Trains reach Villupuram, 40 minutes away by auto or bus. Pondicherry's own airport has only a handful of domestic flights.
Is Pondicherry worth visiting?
Yes, if you like slow, walkable towns rather than sights. The draw is the French quarter's architecture, the cafés, the ashram calm and the mix with Tamil temple life. It is not a beach resort: the town beach is rocky, and swimming means a trip 8-10km out. Two to three days is enough for most people.
Can you visit the Matrimandir in Auroville?
You can view it from the observation platform without booking, and that is what most visitors do. To enter for meditation you must book a free pass in advance at the visitor centre, usually a day or two ahead, and slots are limited. Bring ID, wear covered clothing, and expect a 15-minute walk each way.
When is the best time to visit Pondicherry?
October to March is pleasant, with December and January the coolest and busiest. April to June is very hot and humid, over 35C most days. The northeast monsoon hits from late October into December with heavy short downpours, and cyclone risk peaks in November.
Is Pondicherry expensive?
No. Guesthouses run $12 to $25, heritage boutique hotels in White Town $60 to $150, and Auroville forest stays $30 to $60. Tamil-quarter meals cost $2 to $4 while French-quarter restaurants run $10 to $20. Scooter hire is $4 a day. Budget $35 to $50 daily, or $100 plus if you want a colonial villa room.
Is alcohol cheap in Pondicherry?
Yes, notably cheaper than the rest of Tamil Nadu because of the former French territory's separate excise rules. Beer and spirits cost roughly half of Chennai prices, which is why weekend crowds arrive from out of state. Bars close around 11pm and drinking on the beach is not permitted.
