San José, United States travel guide

Silicon Valley's capital, with a 300-year-old heart and great weather.

  • Best time to visit: April-June, September-October
  • Average daily budget: $150 to $350 USD
  • Ideal trip length: 2 to 3 days

San José is the tenth-largest city in America and the capital of Silicon Valley, but it was farming country and California's first state capital long before the chips arrived. The weather is arguably the best in the Bay Area, the food scene is seriously underrated, and San Francisco is an hour north by train.

Getting around

Mineta San José airport sits 10 minutes from downtown by rideshare. VTA light rail and buses cover the valley but run slowly; Caltrain connects to San Francisco in about an hour. Downtown is walkable, but you'll want a car or rideshare for anything beyond the core. Traffic on 101 and 280 is heavy at rush hour.

Safety

San José is one of the safest large cities in the US, with low violent crime. Standard urban caution applies downtown at night, and car break-ins happen, so leave nothing visible. The bigger issues are practical: summer heat inland, and the cost of everything. Wildfire smoke can affect air quality in late summer; check the AQI.

Frequently asked questions

Is San José, California worth visiting?

Yes, especially paired with the wider Bay Area. The Winchester Mystery House, Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum and Japantown are genuinely distinctive, the weather beats San Francisco's fog, and hotel rates often undercut the city by 30 percent. Two or three days is a good fit.

How far is San José from San Francisco?

About 50 miles. Caltrain takes roughly an hour from Diridon Station to downtown San Francisco, or it's an hour's drive without traffic, double at rush hour. Many visitors base themselves in San José for cheaper hotels and day-trip north by train.

What is there to do in San José?

The Winchester Mystery House, the Tech Interactive, the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum and Japantown top the list, plus Santana Row for shopping and San Pedro Square for food and nightlife. Day trips reach San Francisco, Santa Cruz's boardwalk, Monterey and the South Bay wineries.

When is the best time to visit San José?

April to June and September to October bring warm, dry days around 70-80°F without the summer heat spikes. San José gets 300 days of sunshine a year, so there's no bad season; winter is mild with occasional rain, and summer can push past 90°F inland.

Is San José expensive?

It's Silicon Valley, so yes: mid-range hotels run $150 to $250 and dinner for two $70 to $100. But budget options exist, food from taquerias and pho shops is excellent value at $10 to $15, and many museums are cheap or free. Compared to San Francisco it's the cheaper base.

Can you get around San José without a car?

Partly. Downtown, Japantown and San Pedro Square are walkable, VTA light rail links downtown to Santana Row and the stadium areas, and Caltrain covers San Francisco. For anything spread out, which is most of the valley, you'll want rideshare or a rental.

What day trips work from San José?

San Francisco by Caltrain, Santa Cruz and its beach boardwalk 40 minutes over the hills, Monterey and Carmel 90 minutes south, and Livermore or Gilroy wine country within an hour. Big Basin redwoods and Half Moon Bay beaches also make easy half-days.
