Shimla, India travel guide

The old British summer capital: ridge-top promenades, pine forest and a toy train.

  • Best time to visit: March-June and September-November
  • Average daily budget: $20 to $70 USD
  • Ideal trip length: 2 to 3 days

Shimla was where the Raj fled the heat, and it still looks it: mock-Tudor facades, a Gothic church on the Ridge, and the Mall Road promenade where cars are banned. Behind the colonial set-piece is a steep Himalayan town of cedar forests, monkey-guarded temples and the UNESCO-listed Kalka-Shimla toy train grinding up through 100-odd tunnels. It is easy, walkable and a natural first stop in Himachal. Joy Plus pairs it with the quieter villages around it.

Getting around

Shimla's centre is pedestrianised, so expect to walk, and there is a public lift connecting Cart Road to the Mall to save the steepest climb. Taxis wait at the lift and Victory Tunnel for trips to Kufri, Naldehra or Chail. Reach the town by toy train from Kalka, five to six hours, by bus from Delhi or Chandigarh, or fly into Jubbarhatti, 22km out, with limited services.

Safety

The macaques around Jakhoo and the Ridge snatch food, phones and sunglasses, so keep bags closed and do not make eye contact. Lanes are steep and slippery when wet or icy, so bring grippy shoes in winter. Mountain-road travel to and from Shimla is slow and prone to landslides in monsoon. Winter nights drop below freezing and many budget rooms have no heating.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Shimla?

Two days covers the Ridge, Mall Road, Jakhoo Temple and the Viceregal Lodge comfortably. A third lets you add Kufri, Naldehra or Chail, or simply walk the forest trails around Glen and Annandale. Many travellers use Shimla as a two-night stop before continuing to Manali or Spiti.

When is the best time to visit Shimla?

March to June for mild days and green hills, and September to November for clear post-monsoon views. December to February brings snow and a festive crowd but freezing nights and occasional road closures. Skip July and August, when monsoon rain limits views and raises landslide risk on the approach roads.

How do you get to Shimla from Delhi?

The classic route is an overnight train to Kalka then the narrow-gauge toy train up, five to six hours through the hills. Direct buses take 9 to 11 hours, and a private car around eight. There are also limited flights to Jubbarhatti airport, 22km from town, though they are often weather-affected.

Is the Shimla toy train worth it?

Yes, if you have the time. The Kalka-Shimla line is a UNESCO World Heritage railway climbing through more than 100 tunnels and 800 bridges, and the views beat the bus by a distance. Book weeks ahead in peak season, and choose the Himalayan Queen or Shivalik Deluxe for the best seats.

Does it snow in Shimla?

Usually yes, between late December and February, with January the most reliable month. Snow can shut roads and delay trains for a day or two at a time. If the town itself is bare, Kufri and Narkanda higher up often still have cover and run snow activities.

Is Shimla good for families?

Very. The centre is car-free and walkable, the toy train is a hit with kids, and Kufri has horse rides and a small zoo. The main caveats are steep lanes, which are hard with strollers, and the aggressive monkeys near Jakhoo, so keep snacks out of sight.

Is Shimla expensive?

No. Budget rooms start around $15 USD, decent mid-range hotels run $30 to $70, and heritage properties go higher. Meals cost $2 to $4 at local dhabas and $8 to $15 at Mall Road restaurants. Taxis for a Kufri or Chail day trip are the biggest single cost at roughly $25 to $40 for the car.
