Sibiu, Romania travel guide
Transylvania's Saxon jewel: pastel squares, eyed rooftops and the Carpathians on the doorstep.
- Best time to visit: May-September, plus December for markets
- Average daily budget: $60 to $120 USD
- Ideal trip length: 2 to 3 days
Sibiu is the most polished of Transylvania's Saxon towns: three linked squares of pastel townhouses, medieval towers along the old walls, and attic windows shaped like narrowed eyes that seem to watch you cross the cobbles. It was European Capital of Culture in 2007 and never lost the momentum, and the Fagaras mountains and the Transfagarasan road start just south of town.

Getting around
Sibiu has a small international airport 5km from the centre, reachable in 15 minutes by bus or taxi, with trains from Brasov taking around three and a half hours. The historic centre is entirely walkable and largely pedestrian, so nothing inside the walls needs transport. A hire car is the practical choice for the Transfagarasan highway, fortified churches and mountain villages, since rural bus links are slow and infrequent.
Safety
Sibiu is very safe with low crime and an easy-going feel even late at night; the standard cautions are taxi overcharging (use apps or call a licensed firm) and slippery cobbles in rain or snow. Mountain weather changes fast in the Fagaras, and the Transfagarasan road usually closes from around November to June. Stray dogs exist in rural areas but are rarely aggressive.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in Sibiu?
Two days is right for the town itself: one for the three squares, tower climbs and the Brukenthal, and one for the Astra open-air museum and lower town. Add a third day for the Transfagarasan road, Balea Lake or a Sighisoara and fortified-church loop.
Is Sibiu worth visiting?
Yes. It is the best-preserved and most walkable of the Saxon towns, cheaper than western Europe, and unusually pleasant to spend evenings in thanks to its cafe-filled squares. It also works as the natural base for the Fagaras mountains and the Transfagarasan drive.
What is Sibiu famous for?
Its Saxon German heritage, the two linked main squares, the eye-shaped attic windows on its rooftops, the Liars' Bridge legend, the Brukenthal museum, the huge Astra village museum, and its 2007 stint as European Capital of Culture. Its Christmas market is also considered Romania's best.
When is the best time to visit Sibiu?
May to September for warm weather, open mountain roads and outdoor festivals including the international theatre festival in June. December is excellent for the Christmas market in Piata Mare. Winter is cold and pretty but the Transfagarasan is closed and mountain access is limited.
Sibiu or Brasov, which is better?
Brasov has the more dramatic mountain setting, Bran Castle nearby and more nightlife. Sibiu has the finer squares, better museums and a calmer, more elegant feel. They are about three hours apart, and most Transylvania trips of a week or more comfortably include both.
Can you drive the Transfagarasan from Sibiu?
Yes, it is the closest major city to the northern end and the usual starting point. Expect a full day for the drive to Balea Lake and back, longer if continuing to Vidraru dam and Poenari. The road normally opens around late June and closes by November, so check status before committing.
Is Sibiu expensive?
No, it is one of Europe's better-value city breaks. Budget around $60 to $120 a day. Restaurant mains in the main square are modest by Western standards, museum entry is cheap, and guesthouses in the old town cost a fraction of comparable towns in Austria or Italy.
