Getting around

Arequipa's historic centre is compact and walkable. Taxis and ride apps (Uber, InDrive) are cheap for crossing town or reaching viewpoints, but agree fares for street taxis. The Colca Canyon is a 3 to 4 hour drive, usually done as an organised one or two-day tour, which handles the high-altitude passes.

Safety

Arequipa sits at 2,300m, so take it easy on arrival to adjust to the altitude. The city is generally safe, but use registered taxis or apps at night and watch for pickpockets in crowds. The Colca tour climbs above 4,800m, so acclimatise first and stay hydrated. Tap water isn't drinkable.
