Getting around

Central Auckland is walkable and ferries are the highlight of getting around, reaching Devonport, Waiheke and Rangitoto from the downtown terminal. Buses and trains cover the suburbs (use an AT HOP card). For the west-coast beaches and wider exploring, a rental car or tour is best.

Safety

Auckland is safe and laid-back. The biggest hazards are natural: strong rips at the west-coast surf beaches (swim between the flags only), intense UV, so wear sunscreen even on cloudy days, and changeable weather. Lock cars and don't leave valuables visible at trailheads and beaches.
