Hidden gems
- Papakolea green sand beach, one of four worldwide, a 4km hike near South Point.
- Kona coffee farm tours on the Hualalai slopes, most offering free tastings.
- Pololu Valley's short steep trail to a wild black beach at the end of Highway 270.
- Hilo's Saturday farmers market for rambutan, apple bananas and poke.
Getting around
You need a rental car; there is no practical alternative on an island this size, and the Hele-On bus is infrequent. Kona (KOA) on the west and Hilo (ITO) on the east both take flights, and driving between them takes about 2.5 hours via Waimea or the Saddle Road. Standard rentals are barred from the Mauna Kea summit road and Waipio Valley, so book 4WD if you need them. Fuel is expensive and stations are sparse in the south and on Saddle Road.
Safety
The Big Island is safe from crime beyond car break-ins at trailheads and beach parks, so leave nothing visible in your vehicle. Natural hazards matter more: volcanic vog can affect asthma sufferers on the Kona side, lava viewing conditions change with no notice and closed areas are closed for good reason. Mauna Kea's summit at 4,207m causes altitude sickness and is unsafe within 24 hours of diving. Many beaches have no lifeguards, strong currents and sharp lava rock, and flash floods hit east-side valleys after heavy rain.
