Getting around

Búzios is a peninsula, so getting around means moving between beaches spread along its shores. The town centre and Rua das Pedras are walkable, but to reach the more distant coves most visitors use taxis, ride-hailing, local buses or, most fun, a rented dune buggy, which is something of a Búzios icon. Schooner and boat trips are a popular and scenic way to reach several beaches in one outing, stopping to swim and snorkel. Distances are short but roads can be narrow and busy in high season. Búzios is around two and a half to three hours from Rio de Janeiro by car or comfortable long-distance bus, making it a popular escape from the city.

Safety

Búzios is one of the more upscale and generally safe beach destinations in Brazil, popular with families, couples and international visitors, with a lower crime rate than big cities like Rio. Still, apply standard precautions: keep valuables secure, don't leave belongings unattended on the beach, and be careful with phones and cash in the busy nightlife of Rua das Pedras. Petty theft is the main risk rather than violent crime. Take care on the roads if driving a buggy, wear sun protection under the strong tropical sun, and heed flags and currents on the ocean-facing surf beaches, which can be rough. In high season the town gets very crowded. With everyday care, most visitors find Búzios safe and relaxed.
