Getting around

Downtown Calgary is walkable and the CTrain light rail is free within the downtown core along 7th Avenue. Buses and CTrain cover the rest of the city cheaply. For Banff, Kananaskis and other mountain day trips, renting a car is by far the most practical option, though shuttle services also run frequently.

Safety

Calgary is a safe, orderly city with low crime by international standards, so normal precautions are enough downtown and at night. The weather is the main challenge: winters are cold with sudden chinook wind swings, and summer thunderstorms can be intense. In the mountains, dress for rapidly changing conditions, respect wildlife and check road and avalanche conditions in shoulder seasons.
