Hidden gems

  • The high trail from Manarola via Volastra through the vineyards, away from crowds.
  • Corniglia's quiet lanes and the Belvedere di Santa Maria viewpoint.
  • The tiny swimming spots and rock platforms below Riomaggiore.
  • Early morning in Vernazza before the day-trippers arrive.

Getting around

The local train line links all five villages in just a few minutes each, running frequently, and the Cinque Terre Card covers train travel and trail access. Ferries connect the villages (except cliff-top Corniglia) for a scenic alternative in good weather. Cars are banned or impractical in the villages, so park in La Spezia or Levanto and take the train. Hiking trails are the most rewarding way to travel between villages when open.

Safety

Cinque Terre is very safe, with the main hazards being steep stairs, uneven coastal trails and crowds at the small train platforms. Wear proper hiking shoes, carry water and check which trails are open, as landslides sometimes close sections. Swim only in designated areas as currents can be strong. The villages get extremely busy on cruise days, so plan early starts. Solo travellers, including women, feel very comfortable here.
