  • East Point Reserve at dusk for wallabies and war-history bunkers.
  • Berry Springs Nature Park - clear thermal pools south of the city.

Getting around

The CBD is walkable and a free shuttle bus loops the centre. Buses cover the suburbs, but a hire car is essential for Litchfield, Kakadu and the parks - distances are large and public transport doesn't reach them. Darwin Airport is about 15 minutes from the city.

Safety

Darwin is generally safe, but the Top End is croc country - never swim in rivers, estuaries or unmarked waterholes; obey all crocodile warning signs. The tropical sun and humidity are intense, so hydrate and cover up. The wet season (Nov-Apr) brings monsoonal rain, flooding and marine stingers.
