- Ixpoco, a natural spring and swimming hole on the lake's edge known mostly to locals.
- The night hike near Tikal to spot tarantulas, snakes and glowing fungi in the jungle.
Getting around
Flores is tiny and entirely walkable; you can circle the island in under 30 minutes. Tuk-tuks are the local taxi and cost a few quetzals anywhere on the island or across to Santa Elena. Shuttles and buses to Tikal leave daily from hotels and the Santa Elena bus station. Boats can be hired for lake trips. The Mundo Maya international airport is just outside Santa Elena with flights from Guatemala City.
Safety
Flores is very safe and relaxed, with a strong community feel. Use normal precautions with valuables, especially on crowded shuttles to Tikal. The jungle brings mosquitoes, so use strong repellent and consider malaria prophylaxis. Drink bottled or filtered water. Be careful swimming in the lake outside designated areas due to boat traffic.
