Getting around
Funchal is walkable in the centre, with a seafront promenade linking the old town, market and Lido area, though the city is hilly. Local buses and taxis cover the city, and the cable car connects to Monte. To explore the rest of Madeira's levadas, peaks and villages, renting a car or joining organised tours is the most practical option, as public transport to remote trailheads is limited. Roads are steep, winding and tunnel-filled but well maintained.
Safety
Funchal and Madeira are very safe, with low crime and a relaxed atmosphere. The main risks are outdoors: levada trails can have steep drops, tunnels and slippery sections, so carry a torch, water and proper shoes, and check conditions. Mountain weather changes fast, and the Atlantic has strong currents, so swim at lidos or patrolled beaches. Roads are steep and winding. Solo travellers, including women, feel completely comfortable here day and night.
