Getting around
The Parkway is walkable and the Gatlinburg Trolley covers town, Pigeon Forge and some park access cheaply. A car is essential for Cades Cove, Clingmans Dome and Newfound Gap Road; national park entry is free but a parking tag is required for any stop over 15 minutes. Knoxville airport is about an hour away. Expect heavy traffic on the Parkway on autumn weekends and around holidays, when the 10km to Pigeon Forge can take 45 minutes.
Safety
Gatlinburg is very safe from crime and family-oriented. The real risks are black bears, which are common in town and at cabins, so never leave food out and keep a safe distance. Mountain weather changes fast: Clingmans Dome can be 10C colder and fogged in when town is sunny, and Newfound Gap Road closes for snow and ice in winter. Waterfall rocks are lethally slick, and flash flooding can hit creek trails after summer storms.
