  • Cataloochee Valley on the NC side, where reintroduced elk bugle in fall

Getting around

A car is essential. Gatlinburg is the main hub; Cades Cove is about an hour's drive, Clingmans Dome 45 minutes, and Cherokee just over an hour through the park on Newfound Gap Road. Note there is no entrance fee; the park is free, though parking tags ($5/day) are now required. Knoxville's airport is about an hour away.

Safety

Black bears are common: never feed them, keep 50 yards distance, and store food properly. Trails can be slick and stream crossings rise fast after rain. On the roads, expect sudden stops for 'bear jams'. Cell coverage is spotty in the park. Ticks and summer humidity are the other daily realities; bring repellent and more water than you expect to need.
