Getting around
Baiyun International Airport is 28 km north with a direct metro line to the centre in about 45 minutes. The metro is huge, cheap and signed in English. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before arriving, as cash is barely used, and download offline maps plus a VPN if you rely on Google services.
Safety
Guangzhou is very safe, with low violent crime and heavy CCTV coverage; the main annoyances are pickpockets around Guangzhou Railway Station and crowded markets. Summer is hot and humid with typhoon risk from July to September. Many China visits are visa-free for short stays under current transit and unilateral schemes, but confirm the rules for your passport before booking.
