Getting around

Renting a car is by far the best way to explore Jeju, as the island's sights are scattered and public transport is slow, you'll need an International Driving Permit. The bus network is comprehensive and cheap but time-consuming, with intercity and tourist routes linking major spots. Taxis are fine for short hops but add up over distances. Some travellers use scooters or e-bikes for coastal areas. The airport is in Jeju City, and ferries to nearby islets like Udo and Marado leave from coastal ports. Plan routes in efficient loops to save time.

Safety

Jeju is extremely safe, with very low crime, it's one of the most relaxed places in Korea and excellent for solo travellers, including women, day and night. The main risks are natural: weather on Jeju changes fast, so check forecasts before hiking Hallasan or doing coastal walks, as fog, wind and rain roll in quickly. Roads can be winding and some local drivers fast, so drive carefully if renting a car. Swim only at designated beaches, mind strong currents, and carry layers, as it can be noticeably cooler and windier than the mainland.
