Getting around
Arrive by Alaska Airlines flight or Alaska Marine Highway ferry, as no road connects Juneau to anywhere. Downtown is walkable, the city bus (Capital Transit) reaches Mendenhall Valley, and tour shuttles serve the glacier. Rent a car for a day if you want the full road system's 40 miles at your own pace.
Safety
Juneau is safe from crime; the wilderness is not. Black bears frequent trails and even town in salmon season, so make noise, carry bear spray and never approach. Dress for cold rain any day of the year, stay on marked trails near the glacier as ice caves collapse, and file a plan for backcountry hikes. Weather grounds flights and boats regularly, so keep a buffer day.
