Getting around

Kandy is 3 to 4 hours from Colombo by train or bus, with the rail journey through the hills a highlight in itself. The centre is walkable, and tuk-tuks cover everything else for a dollar or two per hop. Book the Kandy-Ella train weeks ahead for observation or first-class seats; second-class reserved is the smart fallback. Day trips to Sigiriya and Dambulla run 2.5 hours each way.

Safety

Kandy is safe and welcoming, with the usual petty-theft awareness in markets and on trains. Dress modestly with covered shoulders and knees for the Temple of the Tooth, and remove shoes and hats. Monkeys around the lake and Udawatta Kele will snatch food. Hill roads are winding, so allow extra time and avoid night driving on rural stretches.
