Getting around
Lake Garda is best explored by a combination of car, bus and the excellent ferry network, which links the main towns and offers the most scenic way to travel. Driving the lakeside roads is beautiful but slow and tunnel-heavy in high season, with limited parking in popular towns. Cable cars reach the peaks, and bikes are great along the flatter south. The nearest airports are Verona, Bergamo, Brescia and Milan.
Safety
Lake Garda is very safe, with the main risks being practical rather than criminal. Take care swimming, as the lake is deep, cold below the surface and prone to sudden afternoon winds, especially in the north, which can also catch out novice sailors and paddlers. Mountain trails and cable-car peaks demand proper footwear and weather awareness, and lakeside roads are narrow and busy, so drive and cycle cautiously.
