Getting around
A car is essential for exploring Lake Tahoe, as the 72-mile shoreline spans two states and the beaches, trailheads and resorts are spread far apart. Seasonal traffic can be heavy, especially around Emerald Bay and on summer weekends, so start early. Some areas have summer shuttles and ski resorts run winter buses, and rideshare works within South Lake Tahoe, but to truly experience the lake and mountains a car gives the most freedom.
Safety
Lake Tahoe is very safe, with the main risks coming from the high-altitude alpine environment. At over 6,200 feet, altitude can affect visitors, so hydrate and ease into activity. The lake water stays cold year-round, so take care swimming and boating; in winter, prepare for snow, ice and chain controls on mountain roads; and in summer carry layers, water and sun protection, watch for afternoon storms, and stay aware of wildfire conditions and air-quality alerts.
