Hidden gems

  • Leeds Corn Exchange, a domed 1864 trading hall now full of independent shops.
  • Thackray Museum of Medicine, gruesome, brilliant and family-friendly.
  • Kirkstall Abbey, a ruined Cistercian monastery in a riverside park.
  • Temple Works in Holbeck, an Egyptian-style former flax mill facade.

Getting around

The centre is small and walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. Buses cover the suburbs and the free city-centre bus loops the main stops. Leeds station is a major hub: York in 25 minutes, Manchester in an hour, London in just over two. Leeds Bradford Airport is 30 to 40 minutes by the A65 flyer bus.

Safety

Leeds is safe by day and busy with students at night. Call Lane and the Headrow get rowdy at weekend closing time, when petty theft and drunken scuffles are the main risks. Use licensed taxis or apps after dark, keep phones out of back pockets in crowded bars, and take normal care around the station late at night.
