Hidden gems

  • The Philharmonic Dining Rooms, a lavishly tiled Victorian pub (the gents' loos are listed).
  • St Luke's 'bombed-out church', a WWII ruin turned atmospheric event space.

  • Crosby Beach for Antony Gormley's 'Another Place' iron men in the sand.

Getting around

Liverpool's compact centre is easily walkable, linking the waterfront, Ropewalks and the Georgian Quarter on foot. The Merseyrail train network and buses reach Anfield, the suburbs and the Beatles' childhood homes, and the famous Mersey Ferry offers a scenic river crossing. Liverpool John Lennon Airport is a short bus or taxi from the centre, and fast trains connect to Manchester and London.

Safety

Liverpool is a friendly, welcoming city that's safe for visitors, with the usual big-city caution needed around busy nightlife zones like Concert Square late at night. Watch belongings in crowds and on match days, when the centre and Anfield get packed. Stick to licensed taxis or pre-booked rides after dark, and the warm, talkative locals are generally happy to point lost visitors in the right direction.
