Hidden gems

  • A sunset boat ride on the Rio Negro away from the busy port.
  • The floating fuel stations and houses of the river communities.
  • Local Amazonian cuisine like tambaqui fish and tucumã sandwiches.
  • The quieter Praia da Lua river beach near Ponta Negra.

Getting around

Manaus city is best navigated by ride apps like Uber and 99, which are cheap, reliable and far more convenient than the crowded local buses. The historic centre around the opera house is walkable, though the heat and humidity are intense, so explore in the cooler morning hours. Taxis are available but ride apps are usually better value. The real journeys here are on the water: excursions to the Meeting of the Waters, jungle lodges and wildlife trips are reached by boat, almost always arranged through your tour operator or lodge. The airport connects the city by ride app. You won't need a rental car.

Safety

Manaus requires standard big-city caution. Petty theft and opportunistic crime occur, particularly around the port, markets and quieter areas of the centre, so keep valuables hidden, avoid displaying phones or jewellery, and use ride apps rather than walking long distances, especially after dark. Stick to busier, well-frequented areas and the upscale Ponta Negra district in the evenings. On jungle excursions, follow your guide's instructions, protect against mosquitoes (yellow fever vaccination and malaria precautions are advised), and stay hydrated in the heat. Solo travellers should book reputable tour operators and stay alert in the city, but the organised Amazon experiences themselves are well-managed and safe.
