Getting around
Fly into Monterey Regional Airport (MRY) or drive 2 hours south from San Francisco on Highway 1. The peninsula is compact: the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail links the aquarium, wharf and Pacific Grove by bike or foot. A car is essential for 17-Mile Drive, Point Lobos and Big Sur; parking in Cannery Row garages runs $15 to $25 a day.
Safety
Monterey is very safe, including for solo travelers. The real hazards are natural: cold water (10-15°C year-round) with rip currents, sneaker waves on open beaches, and cliffs at Point Lobos. Sea lions and otters are protected: keep your distance. Summer fog makes Highway 1 slick; drive slowly on coastal curves.
