Getting around

Montevideo is walkable in the centre, and the long rambla is best explored on foot or by bike. City buses are cheap and extensive; use the local STM card. Apps like Uber operate. Ferries and buses reach Colonia and Buenos Aires; buses run east to the Punta del Este beaches.

Safety

Montevideo is among the safer capitals in South America but petty theft happens, so keep phones and bags discreet, especially in Ciudad Vieja after dark and on quiet streets. Use ride apps at night, and take normal care with valuables on the beach and rambla.
