Getting around

Downtown Nassau is walkable, and Paradise Island is a short bridge or water-taxi hop away. Jitneys (public minibuses) are cheap and reach Cable Beach and Arawak Cay. Taxis are plentiful but pricey and unmetered, so agree fares first. For other islands and the swimming pigs, you'll take organised boat tours or domestic flights. Rental scooters and cars are available for exploring New Providence.

Safety

Tourist areas like Bay Street, Paradise Island and Cable Beach are generally safe, but petty crime and some violent crime occur in residential areas away from the tourist zones, especially 'Over the Hill'. Stay in well-trafficked areas, use licensed taxis at night, and don't flash valuables. Watch ocean currents and follow snorkel-boat guidance. Tap water is generally safe but many prefer bottled.
