Hidden gems

  • Peguyangan Blue Staircase, 700 blue steps down to a cliffside spring temple.
  • Tembeling forest and its jungle pools, reached by a rough track.
  • Banah Cliff viewpoint, usually empty at sunset.
  • Suwehan Beach, a long descent that keeps the tour groups away.

Getting around

Fast boats run from Sanur to Toyapakeh or Banjar Nyuh in 30 to 45 minutes, roughly $15 to $25 each way, with several departures each morning. On the island, scooters cost about $6 to $8 a day but the roads are genuinely rough, so hire a driver for around $40 to $50 a day if you are not a confident rider. Boat trips to Manta Point and Gamat Bay run as half-day snorkel tours from about $25.

Safety

Scooter accidents are the real danger here: steep gradients, gravel and blind bends injure visitors weekly, and travel insurance often excludes riding without a licence. Cliff edges have no railings and the descents to Kelingking and Diamond Beach are steep and slippery when wet. Currents at Crystal Bay and Manta Point are strong, so only snorkel with a boat crew. Medical facilities are basic; serious cases go back to Bali.
