Getting around
Pisa's historic centre is small and entirely walkable, with the Leaning Tower about a 20-minute stroll or short bus ride from the train station. The compact layout means you rarely need transport within the city. Pisa Centrale station has fast, frequent trains to Florence, Lucca, the coast and the Cinque Terre, making car-free day trips simple, and Pisa's international airport is just minutes from the centre by the automated PisaMover shuttle. A car is only useful for exploring deeper rural Tuscany.
Safety
Pisa is a safe, easy-going city and very comfortable for solo travellers, including women, day and night. The main concern is pickpocketing and overcharging in the busy Piazza dei Miracoli and around the train station, so keep valuables secure and watch for souvenir-stall scams. The student nightlife areas are lively but generally relaxed. As with any tourist hotspot, be wary of unofficial vendors and 'free' bracelet hustlers near the tower. Standard city precautions are all that's needed for a smooth visit.
